31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 31

31 Oct

Phwoaaaar made it! These last few days have been a bit of a struggle, but I’m glad I powered through. Just so I can say I did it :3 The last challenge was to re-create my favourite challenge.

One of my ultimate easy-go-to designs for events is glitter gradients, so I decided to re-visit Day 10. It’s a bit different this time round, instead of metallic I wanted glitter!

I heart glitter. I used China Glaze Exotic Encounters, Blonde Bombshell, I’m Not Lion, and Golden Enchantment. Nice and easy, but super sparkly and pretty :3

I wonder what I’m guna do now…

Pst… I decided to try out the nail-blogger classic cuticle-following watermark. I’m still not too sure if I’m doing it right, but does it look okay?

31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 30

30 Oct

Wow just one more day to go! I’m pretty glad, because as you’ll see today, my poor poor hands are getting pretty beaten-up. I’m not sure if it’s the challenge, extra housework, or an overly zealous bitey-kitten; it doesn’t matter. All I know is that they’re getting worse and worse every day >_<

Today’s challenge was ‘inspired by a tutorial’, so I went back to the first nail-arty thing I came across online that actually made me curious about nail art (as opposed to straight nail polish). It was a picture I saw on Tumblr, by the marvellous Nailside. She has quite a few tutorials on her site, as well as heaps of other designs, but I wanted to stick with the original one – her freehand cloud design!

Here is my not-so-perfect rendition.

The brushes on the polishes I chose weren’t really the best shape for this design, because they were quite flat. However, now that I know how truly easy this is, I won’t hesitate to try it again with round-brushed polishes :3

I used three “Cairuo” polishes. I suspect these are just re-branded CR (or Care Romeis) polishes, as the symbol and ingredients are exactly the same. But these bottles are a thousand million times cuter, so I was sucked in. And hey, at only $2 each, you can’t argue. The colours are #34 (dark brown), #16 (sky blue), and #33 (the lighter taupe and my favourite).

I plan on returning to the store where I found these, and getting heaps more.

Pst… See how beat-up my fingers are getting? 😦

31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 29

29 Oct

Supernatural nails. Bleurgh. Considering how many halloween nails I’m seeing everywhere at the moment, I felt decidedly uninspired. I don’t think it helped that I spent the day out and was running low on daylight for photos!

I decided on purple nails with gold stars, inspired by the cliché wizard’s hat. Because magic? I dunno.

The purple is Kleancolor Love Affair, and the stars were done with my gold glitter Jordana striper (called Golden Artist).

A bit boring, but cute in its own way :3

31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 28

28 Oct

Squee! Getting so close to the end!

Today’s challenge is ‘inspired by a flag’. Now I dunno about other polish fiends, but since the Olympics resulted in an outright explosion of flag-and-other-patriotic manis, I became a little bit sick of them. I wanted to do something a little different, and as MaSucree said, “A lot more unique!” than a lot of the other flag manis out there.

I decided to spell out ‘flag’ in nautical signal flags!

I did it for the lulz ^_^

I really love the ‘L’ and am keen to do checkered nails again! The ‘F’ was a complete nightmare though. Signal flags are square, so trying to do the diamond really didn’t translate so well >_<

Polishes used were:

  • China Glaze Hey Sailor (red)
  • China Glaze First Mate (blue)
  • China Glaze Liquid Leather (black)
  • Santee Beach Yellow
  • Jordana White / Jordana Pop Art Contemporary White

I still think this was a fun one to do, and I’m happy that I came up with something a little different 😀 I got the inspiration from another Studio Ghibli film, Kokuriko-zaka Karaor From Up on Poppy Hill. The main character raises signal flags every morning in memory of her father.

Til tomorrow~

31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 27

27 Oct

Gah ‘inspired by artwork’ was a total nightmare for me. I have zero interest in art, unless it’s by Brian Froud or concerned with Lord of the Rings. So obviously my favourite artists are Brian Froud (love you long time), Alan Lee (who doesn’t seem to have a website I can find), and John Howe. Which is of absolutely no use for this challenge, as I can’t draw for rabbits. (Wait what?)

Sigh.

I went internet trawling for abstract or simple modern art, and found this piece that had pretty colours.

Image from artprints.com

It’s by Nancy Ortenstone, and this one is called Ocean Song. Hey, now that’s art I can get into.

I quickly yanked out a bunch of blues and greens and got going with some sponges!

Okay, no it’s not exactly like the painting. But the whole point of this challenge is to be inspired by the artwork, not to replicate it. Right? Right! This one had to be taken outside in the sun, because no matter how hard I tried inside, my camera kept turning my fingers a terrifying shade of red. Which was not accurate at all O_O

So even though this challenge terrified me, I’m quite happy with how it turned out. Even though I sponge all the time, doing it with so many colours and so haphazardly never would have occurred to me. I’ll definitely do it again! They’re like watercolour nails :3

Anyway, colours used were:

  • China Glaze For Audrey (base colour)
  • Kleancolor Mystic Grass
  • China Glaze Exotic Encounters
  • China Glaze First Mate
  • China Glaze Electric Beat
  • Essie Smooth Sailing
  • Jordana Mint Candy

Then I topcoated it and voila.

That list is in the order I used the polishes 🙂

Until tomorrow!

31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 26

26 Oct

Today was ‘inspired by a pattern’. I toyed with the idea of gingham nails, but ended up coming back to houndstooth because of time restraints. Stamping is heaps faster! I did some hunting for colour inspiration, because black-and-white is a bit boring to me, and I found this tan-and-brown version that I rather liked. Probably because I’m rather fond of browns and nudes :3

Om nom nom. I went with Kleancolor Mocha as base, with stamping using Kleancolor Cappuccino and plate BM-322 for the houndstooth pattern.

Yay! I love it. I’m going to do more stamping with these colours, I LOVE brown polish!

*swoon*

P.S. At this point I’m not too sure if there will be a post tomorrow as I have a wedding to go to… We’ll see how things go, maybe I can make some time to get it done today.

31 Day Nail Challenge: Day 25

25 Oct

Phwoar we are getting so close to the end of this challenge I can practically taste it! I have a few things for you today, starting with something non-related to the challenge but completely exciting.

FLOAM!

My bottle of Floam arrived yesterday from Ninja Polish, and I was so excited that I had to take off my Tamora Pierce nails to try it out! As you may know, I’m on extreeeeemely limited polish-buying privileges at the moment due to my lack of income (le sad), but I snuck this one in when I received a ‘back-in-stock’ email from Ninja Polish. I still don’t know if the Husband has even noticed yet. HA!

Flooooooam!

Anyway, today’s challenge was ‘inspired by fashion’, which really stumped me. I’m not into fashion at all really, so I had to go from my limited knowledge gleaned from general internet-surfing. I noticed a while ago that fishtail braids were everywhere on Tumblr, so figured that was some kind of fashion. So I gave them a go on my nails!

…and then smashed them up and ruined them. They were bumpy as hell anyway, and the pink annoyed me because it just dominated everything. I was terrified that it was going to stain my nails and I’d have pink stripes when I removed it, but luckily I had started with two coats of the silver. Phew! These colours were Kleancolor Pearl Silver, Metallic Aqua and Metallic Fuchsia. Not my favourite mani, next time I think I’ll use thinner and less metallic polishes.

So I took it off and tried to find some different inspiration. My last job was at Overland, a footwear company here in NZ. One major trend I remember from LAST summer’s shoes was colour-blocking, which I quite liked the look of. Plus I like shoes more than clothes. I went hunting online (aka Google Image search), and found these shoes in a colour combo that appealed to me.

I wouldn’t be able to walk in those, but damn if they aren’t beautiful.

As ever, it’s simple and easy for me. And yet I still manage to mess things up >_< I used tape for the pink down the bottom, but didn’t feel like waiting for stuff to dry so free-handed the blue. Hence the uneven-ness. You get the idea though right? Colours were Jordana Pink Lemonade, Jordana Tangy and China Glaze First Mate. I quite like these nails, I think they’re pretty cute, but also bold :3

As a final touch I added a coat of Essie’s Matte About You, since the shoes that inspired them were suede.

Aaaaaand that’s it. That’s what’s on my nails right now.

Fashion is hard -_-‘

-Del x

Pssst… Shiny or matte?
